Local Sites and Civil War
This book is the product of a course on the Civil War taught to 8th and 10th graders at Hearthstone School in Sperryville, VA. Hearthstone School founded in 1996 as a parent cooperative, is a pre-school through high school that uses the arts to teach. The parents and teachers are striving to provide an education which focuses on the creative, intellectual and spiritual dimensions of learning.
The founders of Hearthstone are interested in the curriculum of the worldwide Waldorf School movement, incorporating aspects of this approach. The school focuses on a balance of the head, the heart and the hands. Studies occur in month-long Main Lesson blocks where one subject is pursued in depth.
Hearthstone values practical, creative problem-solving. Hence, the study of the Civil War for the 8th and 10th graders drew upon the rich local history of Virginia's Piedmont region and the medium of photography, whose use became widespread during the Civil War.
